CEC and SDS

A short video explaining the new way of delivering social support in Edinburgh can now be viewed on the City of Edinburgh Council’s You Tube channel.

The lively two-minute animation spells out key information on Self-directed Support (SDS) – the new way for Scotland’s councils to help people of all ages to live independently at home and become more involved in the community.

You can view the Council SDS video here.  English language subtitles are in place to help people with impaired hearing.

SDS gives people much more choice and control about the way they are supported than ever before.

The new measures – which came into effect in April 2014 – have been described as the biggest change in local authority social care provision since the introduction of community care in the early 1990s.

If you are an adult and think you or an adult you know could benefit from Self-directed Support in Edinburgh, speak to your social care worker or call Social Care Direct  on 0131 200 2324 – or email socialcaredirect@edinburgh.gov.uk

Children and parents/carers should call  0131 200 2327 or  email cf.socialcaredirect@edinburgh.gov.uk

Independent Review Service for the Social Fund

This is perhaps the final Social Fund Commissioner’s Annual Report and covers the period 2011/2012. The Welfare Reform Act 2012 contains provision to abolish this role, bringing with it the end to the independent review process. Current arrangements for the payment of Community Care Grants and Crisis Loans will end, with powers transferred to Scottish Government and consequently local authorities.

Welfare Reform – the aftermath

Despite having missed the meeting last week, I gather it was very informative and offered a real insight into the challenges our service users face with the ongoing cuts to social welfare and the impact these cuts are having on the services we provide. Many thanks to our speakers and to all who attended – I received an email from Bill Scott to advise he really enjoyed the discussion and it raised some questions he hadn’t previously thought of. He also sent me through copies of his presentation and some other documents, available to view here in our Library.

Looking forward to the October meeting now – we plan to focus on self-directed support.

See you then!
